Classics we cover in depth
Some of the most important classics are discussed within longer articles rather than as single recipes:
- Manhattan and Martinez: the ancestors of the martini, in From Martinez to Dry Martini.
- Aperol Spritz and L'Apéro drinks: in our French aperitif guide.
- Vermouth on ice, vermouth and soda: in the vermouth guide.
- Nightcaps such as the Stinger and Brandy Alexander: on the late-night menu.
Basic measures and terms
- Simple syrup: equal parts sugar and water by weight, stirred until dissolved.
- Rich syrup: two parts sugar to one part water.
- Dash: a single quick shake from a bitters bottle, about 1 ml.
- Double strain: straining through a regular strainer and a fine mesh strainer to remove ice shards and pulp.
- Express: squeezing a citrus peel over a drink to spray its oils on the surface.
